Understanding the Presentation and Optimal Management of Endometriosis
Endometriosis is a condition that has a long history of delayed diagnosis and poor treatment. Due to the breadth of symptoms, patients may be referred to a variety of clinicians and often have long and complex histories, suffering a great deal of disappointment.
This course is aimed at primary care clinicians, general surgeons, colorectal surgeons, general gynaecologists and other healthcare professionals who would welcome a greater understanding of the presentation and management of endometriosis. The course aims to provide a better understanding of the disease and the grades of severity. Whilst minor disease can be managed by general gynaecologists, severe rectovaginal endometriosis (RVE) is usually managed by advanced laparoscopic surgery. The British Society of Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE) established the concept of endometriosis centres, where teams of clinicians (Gynaecologists, Colorectal surgeons, Urologists and Pain, Fertility and Nurse Specialists) work together to treat this complex condition.
The BSGE is advising the Department of Health that severe RVE is only managed through this growing network of expert centres (see www.bsge.org.uk for more).
