Opportunity for training for the RCOG SITM: Management of complex non-malignant disease (MCND)

ST5/ST6 1

Recruitment Timetable

Apply from 20 February 2024
Closing date 11 March 2024
Interview dates 5 April 2024.

We are pleased to ask for applications for training for the RCOG SITM: Management of complex non-malignant disease.

This module provides an exciting opportunity to develop skills in advanced laparoscopic surgery, gynaecological imaging, multidisciplinary working, and a deeper understanding of alternative treatments aiming to provide holistic patient centred care. More details of the curriculum are available on the RCOG website https://www.rcog.org.uk/media/kuppdzt4/special-interest-definitive-document-final-3.pdf.

This SITM must be undertaken in conjunction with the Gynaecological Surgical Care SITM. Those applying must show evidence towards achieving this SITM. Though trainees entering ST5 level from August can apply, the post is better suited to ST6 level. Without demonstrable experience in components of the Gynaecological Surgical Care SITM it is advised to complete the Gynaecological Surgical Care SITM prior to re-application.

Applicants must have a minimum 18-months whole time equivalent training time until CCT from commencement of the post (August 2024). Completion of the SITM is usually expected to require 24 months in training. Training cannot be extended, except by outcome 3 at ARCP, if the applicant does not have sufficient time remaining to complete the training.

Currently only one training opportunity for MCND is available in Severn, commencing August 2024 at North Bristol NHS Trust. The regional preceptor is Miss Jessica Preshaw, Consultant Gynaecologist, MCND SITM supervisor and co-lead for the North Bristol NHS Trust Endometriosis Centre. It is possible that other Trusts may be able to offer the MCND training and if so, additional applicants may be granted MCND training opportunities.

North Bristol NHS Trust is the largest trust in the Southwest region and one of the largest trusts in the country. The gynaecology unit is a tertiary referral centre for the care of women with severe endometriosis, urogynaecology and subfertility. It is a BSGE Accredited Centre for the treatment of endometriosis. With three full time consultants and one endometriosis clinical nurse specialist we run weekly endometriosis clinics, and approximately six laparoscopic surgery lists a week including robotics and a regular colorectal joint list. There is a monthly endometriosis MDT and complementary monthly pelvic pain MDT.

Applicants must have an NTN in the Severn Deanery and should have a desire to develop a special interest in laparoscopic surgery, being able to already demonstrate a degree of aptitude in this surgical field.

The successful applicant(s) will continue national terms and conditions as a specialty doctor in training and will be assigned to one Trust for the duration of the SITM training.
