Description of Department and Training Opportunities
Musgrove Park Hospital (Somerset NHS Foundation Trust) is set in central southern Somerset, serving a wider population of 544 000 people. It is easily accessible via the M5 and has good train links to Bristol. It is a friendly and supportive unit with excellent training opportunities.
Obstetric Services
Regular Day surgery and outpatient procedure clinics are held several times a week and provide an opportunity to develop hysteroscopic and laparoscopic
The maternity unit supports approximately 3500 deliveries per year. There are 2 main maternity wards covering both antenatal and postnatal care. We have an 8-bedded Labour Ward, a low-risk birthing centre and a dedicated Obstetric theatre. We are also supported by an excellent neonatal unit (Level 2). A triage unit, antenatal clinic area and maternity ultrasound are also located within the maternity unit.
Consultants provide resident on call services within normal working hours and are available from home outside of this. There is a single tier registrar rota (well supported by the on call consultant) which provides excellent opportunity for trainees to develop management and leadership skills. There is free onsite accommodation for those covering on call shifts.
Trainees are encouraged to spend time in general antenatal clinics, specialised clinics (such as pre-term birth, maternal medicine and mental health) and fetal medicine clinics (gaining scanning experience).
Gynaecology Services
The unit has numerous opportunities for gynaecology training. There are regular outpatient clinics in both general gynaecology and specialist services such as urogynaecology, vulval conditions, endometriosis, reproductive medicine and menstrual disorders to support a wide variety of training needs.
There are regular theatre lists (in main theatres and the day surgery unit) and opportunities for surgical training in hysteroscopic procedures, laparoscopic and open benign gynaecology, urogynaecology and endometriosis surgery (the department has accreditation as an endometriosis centre). There are also outpatient procedure clinics to develop skills such as outpatient hysteroscopy and minor procedures.
There is an Early Pregnancy Unit which provides excellent training in ultrasound. There is also a consultant led scan clinic fortnightly which trainees are encouraged to attend.
Gynaeoncology Services
Musgrove park has a tertiary level service for gynaecological oncology, covering South Somerset and parts of West Dorset. The medical team is made up of 4 consultants and 2 senior clinical fellows and is supported by a team of specialist nurses. There are opportunities for surgical training, oncology clinics, colposcopy, diagnostic services (such as two week wait clinics) and to attend specialist MDT meetings.
---------------------------------------------------
In addition to these clinical opportunities, there are weekly departmental teaching sessions, risk management meetings and CTG meetings which trainees are encouraged to attend. There are also opportunities for trainees to further their experience in medical education as we have undergraduate students from both Bristol and Peninsula Medical Schools rotating through the department.
