Description of Department and Training Opportunities

St Michael’s Hospital is part of the University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, the major teaching hospital within Severn Postgraduate Medical Education. All major medical and surgical specialities are housed within the city.

St Michael’s Hospital is a fully integrated obstetrics and gynaecology single site facility. There are over 5000 deliveries, approx 9000 gynaecology referrals and 5000 gynaecology inpatients per annum. St Michael’s Hospital is a regional referral centre for fetal and maternal medicine and gynaecological oncology. Many of the departments have excellent national and international reputations.

The hospital provides a wealth of general and subspecialist experience and training. In addition to general antenatal and gynaecology clinics there are specialist clinics in reproductive endocrinology, infertility, menopause, psychosexual medicine, colposcopy, outpatient hysteroscopy, paediatric and adolescent gynaecology, gynaecological oncology, early pregnancy problems, substance misuse and maternal medicine with joint clinics in cardiac disease, endocrinology and haematology. In fetal medicine there are daily clinics in addition to fetal cardiology and interventional procedures. The department has accreditation for subspecialist training in feto-maternal medicine, gynaecological oncology and in addition is able to offer a wide range of ATSMs.

The close links with the University of Bristol facilitate opportunities for research and training in medical education.
